UH Campus Supercomputer              

By installing the client software,  you will be donating the idle CPU cycles on your machine for research projects utilizing UH BOINC Pool. You can change the preferences on the software anytime after installation.

Installing in Windows 

• The client software can be downloaded from http://BOINC.berkeley.edu/download.php
• Download only the recommended version of software. Beta/Alpha versions sometimes lead to problems
• During Installation, multiple Setup type options are provided.
• If you have administrative rights, ‘Service Installation’ is recommended. The project gets maximum benefit from your system when installed in this mode.
• If Administrative rights are not available, it is recommended that you select ‘Shared Installation’.
• Software also provides ‘Single-User Installation’ mode.
• On selecting Service Installation, software requires User/Password to be provided
• Please note this is Windows workstation login for administrative user and not BOINC (client) user for attaching to projects
• Once the client software is installed, launch the BOINC manager from Start menu à Programs. BOINC client will ask for the project URL
• Provide the URL (We have 2 projects as of now. You can follow the same steps to attach to both)

• http://vcsc.cs.uh.edu/virtual-prairie/
• In the next step, user information in asked.
• It is recommended that you select new user and provide a valid email address.
• If there are any issue on installing with above option, please user the account details provided below
• User Name:  boinc.uh@gmail.com
• Password   :  server@cs.uh
• This completes the installation process

Installing in Unix/Linux

• Download the BOINC client - Recommended version (standard GUI) for Linux/x86 platform from http://BOINC.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
• The current project on BOINC server has been compiled using GCC version 3.4.6 20060404. Please ensure you have same or higher version of GCC for the application to work in your system.
• Run the script, BOINC_5.8.16_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh. This creates a directory ‘BOINC’ which client software files. We could run client either from command line or using GUI.
• To run in command line
• Start client using ./run_client
• We can connect to the project using a new account. First that account has to be created. It can be done using the command below which creates account key
  ./BOINC_cmd --create_account http://vcsc.cs.uh.edu/second-computing/
  <email> <passwd> <name>
• Then we can attach this account to the project using
• ./BOINC_cmd --project_attach http://vcsc.cs.uh.edu/second-computing/  <key>
• To run client in GUI mode
• Start client using ./run_manager
• Follow the same steps as in Windows installation
• For installing BOINC client as a daemon process in Linux, please refer to the instructions http://BOINC.berkeley.edu/auto_start.php

Checking your contribution

You will be able to check your contribution to the project using the steps below 

• Login to project URL [ http://vcsc.cs.uh.edu/second-computing/home.php ] using your BOINC project account.
• Login by clicking on ‘Your account’ link from the home page
• After logging in, there is a Work done section which show the Total credit earned so far.
